More than 800 people paid for fake Covid-19 vaccines in Uganda

More than 800 people received fake doses of Covid-19 vaccines in Uganda, East Africa, last week. There are reports of mistaken people who died of the disease in the midst of the second wave that hits the country.

According to Dr. Wallen Naamara, head of the State Council's Health Monitoring Unit, the coup took place between May 15th and June 17th.

A doctor accused of leading the scheme has fled and is wanted by authorities. Two nurses who would also have participated in the coup were detained. It is suspected that the scammers injected water into customers, who paid up to 200,000 shillings (R$ 279) for each dose of the vaccine.

“The labels on these vaccines seem to have been stolen some or even produced in Kampala (the Ugandan capital), but they didn't go through the right government channels. Almost all Covid-19 vaccines are 5 ml, but these don't seem to be 5 ml, they're bigger,” said Dr. Naamara.

The nurses accused another doctor, Dr Francis Baguma, of providing the vaccines. He is also wanted by local police and remains at large.

As of Thursday (1), more than 5.5 million cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in 55 African countries, according to data the US Johns Hopkins University. The reported deaths in Africa reached 142,948. South Africa has the highest number of reported cases, 1.97 million, and recorded 60,647 deaths. Other countries most affected are Morocco (531,361), Tunisia (420,103), Egypt (281,031), Ethiopia (276,174), Libya (193,474) and Kenya (184,161).
