Uprising in New York to protest police violence against gays founded a new kind of LGBT movement.
Visitors to the famous Stonewall Inn bar in New York's East Village neighborhood were surprised at the turn of 2018 to 2019 when a mother and her teenage son took the stage at the venue after midnight to present a musical number.
Before singing Material Girl verses with David Banda, her 13-year-old son on guitar, Madonna gave a speech explaining why she was there that New Year's Eve.
"I am proudly standing here at the place Pride began, the legendary Stonewall Inn, at the birth of a new year. We come together tonight to celebrate 50 years of revolution!", she said, recorded by many cell phones. "We will never forget the Stonewall riots and those who stood up and said 'Enough!'"
He continued: "Our brothers and sisters before us were not free to celebrate as we are doing tonight, and we must never forget that. Stonewall was a turning point in history, catapulting LGBT rights into public conversations and sparking gay activism." .
