China asks the US to protect the global environment and stop causing problems

China asks the United States to stop slandering Beijing and make real contributions to protecting the global environment rather than creating problems, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said on Friday.

Hua made the comments at a press conference in response to the recent US accusations about China's environmental issues.

She said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to ecological and environmental protection. It has made resource conservation and environmental protection a basic state policy and sustainable development a national strategy. It has seriously fulfilled its obligations under international environmental treaties on climate change, biodiversity governance, protection of the ozone layer and prevention and control of chemical pollution, with remarkable results.

As for carbon emissions, Hua said that by the end of 2019, China's CO2 emissions per unit of GDP were 48.1 percent lower compared to 2005, and the share of non-fossil fuels reached 15.3 percent, reaching the climate action targets for 2020 ahead. Investment in renewable energy has exceeded $ 100 billion for five consecutive years, and China is home to more than half of the world's new energy vehicles. The country has announced that it will increase its nationally determined contribution targets and strive to reach peak CO2 emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060.

China has contributed a lot to global forest resources, sustainable forest products and trade, said Hua, adding that 2009 to 2019, China completed the forestation of 70.39 million hectares, registering the largest increase in forest resources worldwide , according to the spokeswoman.

Noting that China strictly manages solid waste and marine debris, she said that by the end of 2020, the country will basically achieve the goal of zero imports of solid waste. Nearly 99% of China's urban household waste is treated to make it harmless.

China implements the world's most stringent vessel monitoring system and has zero tolerance for illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, Hua added.

Hua said that China has also been deeply involved in international exchange and cooperation. It was the first to sign and ratify the Convention on Biological Diversity. It initiated the International Green Development Coalition of the Belt and Road Initiative. It carried out exchange and cooperation in environmental protection with more than 100 countries, carried out a large number of biodiversity cooperation projects and played a constructive role in improving global governance on biodiversity.

"In contrast, emissions per capita in the United States are three times the global average, more than twice - having once reached almost five times - of China, with cumulative emissions about three times higher than Chinese," he emphasized. Hua.

Facts have proven that the United States itself is the single biggest contributor to damage to international environmental cooperation, being the most potent threat to the global environment, said Hua.

Noting that American officials discredited and attacked China entirely for political reasons, Hua said they should stop malicious slander against China, reflect on their own behavior, take responsibility for the environment and make tangible contributions to the protection of the world. global environment, rather than inciting problems.
